A weekend to learn how to
just do things

Can we really just do things?

Yes, we can.

Can you teach me how? Is there an agency school?

Yes, we are making it happen!

Inspired by Ms. Bowman's Social School, Agency School is a gathering for people who want to learn how to take action. Three days of talks, discussions, and community building in the heart of San Francisco.

The Goal of Agency School

The goal of Agency School is to help people learn how to have more aligned agency. Each speaker will choose their own topic, but they've been given this framework as a guide for how their talk might fit into the bigger picture.

Agency framework: a 2x2 matrix with Self Esteem on the Y-axis and Agency strategies on the X-axis, showing the path toward becoming joyful, high-energy, agentic sages

This framework is inspired by Peter Limberger's article on agency and by the teachings of many Teapot folks on Twitter.

Schedule

Tentative — subject to change

Friday

April 10
6:00 PM Doors open, welcome, and gather
6:30 PM Opening panel: "What is agency?" with speakers
7:30 PM Evening talks
"Experiments in getting unstuck — with curiosity and wonder"
Until you are unstuck in some of the core areas of your life, it's hard to cultivate a strong amount of agency. So how do you get unstuck in these core areas? Chris talks through what has worked for him.
"A guided experiment towards jhana"
9:30 PM End of day one

Saturday

April 11
10:00 AM Morning talks Talks may shift in order; we'll aim to keep them within their block
"The art of being stuck"
Stuckness is often treated as a problem to solve or avoid. This talk reframes it as a signal that reveals your relationship with yourself. Through the lens of wonder, stuckness becomes something you can engage with rather than escape.
"It's the patriarchy, stupid"
The System granting agency feels like empowerment, but it's just putting a guard uniform on the inmates. Featuring: Barbieland, male-to-chad transsexuality, Zeus vs. Yahwe.
12:00 PM Lunch break
1:00 PM Afternoon talks Talks may shift in order; we'll aim to keep them within their block
"What Cooperation with God Feels Like"
The wise agency conversation asks how we act well. Most of the answers are still in the head. This session moves the conversation from philosophy into the body and the present moment. We'll spend time together grounding in contemplative practices to understand what it feels like to cooperate with God.
"Death: What is it good for?"
Death is the ultimate certainty. It is also one of the strongest drivers of agency. In this experiential session, you'll explore a simple two-level framework for mapping your relationship to death and see how it might offer practical insight into how you move in the world.
"The Grandiosity Gap: How To 10x Your Agency (Unglamorously) By Increasing Your Contact With Reality"
For most people, agency is perceived as a point of pride when in reality, it is a willingness to continuously be humbled in the process of updating our working models of reality. Exploration of (~5) psychological skills that need to be cultivated for agency to become an effective and regular practice.
4:00 PM
"The Rejectionathon"
Participants will be put into teams, given a list of challenges, and unleashed upon Hayes Valley! The team with the most rejections wins.
5:00 PM Dinner break & Rejectionathon continued
7:00 PM Evening talks Talks may shift in order; we'll aim to keep them within their block
"Agency's Principal Problem"
"Productivity, happiness and other trivialities"
9:00 PM
"Why You Need A Gang"
Agency is a function of groups. We'll explore why forming a gang is one of the most effective ways to increase your ability to do things.
9:30 PM End of day two

Sunday

April 12
10:00 AM Morning talks Talks may shift in order; we'll aim to keep them within their block
Wystan@WystanTBS 25 min · remote
"Awareness, Attention, and Agency"
Phenomenologically, the field of agency is firstly the scope of one's awareness, and within that the clarity and power of attention. By opening awareness and strengthening attention you can not only expand effective agency, but awaken to the nature and unfixated freedom of your own heart and mind.
"You can just run conferences, start nonprofits, get donations"
If you're willing to not get rich from it, you can accomplish a very wide variety of goals using other people's money and have a great deal of fun doing it.
12:00 PM Lunch break
1:00 PM Afternoon talks Talks may shift in order; we'll aim to keep them within their block
"From footsteps to highways: agency, ethics, and the burden of going first"
"How to (Literally) Cook: Training Agency by Playing Around in the Kitchen"
"Core Gameplay Loop for Inner Alignment: A Somatic IFS Approach"
"How to Copilot Your Attention into High Agency"
4:00 PM Closing ceremony
4:30 PM Event concludes
